5K Curricular Offerings

CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION:

Bible
Bible is a core subject at Denbigh Christian Academy. Bible grades in 5K are primarily based on weekly memory verses. Students will be taught various Bible stories and Biblical principles. A Beka Publications is the primary resource for our Bible curriculum. Denbigh Christian Academy teaches Biblical Doctrine. Weekly chapels are an integral part of the spiritual formation of our students. Each class presents at least one chapel program per year. Students are encouraged to participate weekly in worship, praise, and age appropriate application of God’s Word.

Reading/Phonics
Denbigh Christian Academy teaches Reading using a phonetic approach. Students in 5K review vowel and consonant sounds, consonant-vowel blends, and the one and two vowel rules. They are introduced to phonics rules and special sounds. Students learn to read sentences and stories with one and two vowel words. A Beka Publications is the primary resource for our Reading/Phonics curriculum. Students are graded on their ability to read orally, to match sounds on worksheets, and to complete oral and written Phonics tests.

Numbers
Students in the 5K classes at Denbigh Christian Academy learn to recognize and to count numbers from 1-100. They also work with number concepts, before and after, largest and smallest numbers, and practice counting by ones, twos, fives, and tens from 1-100.  5K students learn coin values, the dollar bill, telling time, and use of the calendar including the days of the week. They are introduced to number words. 5K students learn addition facts in the 1-10 families and are also introduced to subtraction and one-step story problems using addition. Students are graded on oral counting, worksheet activities, and their ability to solve simple problems on oral and written tests. A Beka Publications is the primary resource for our Mathematics curriculum.

Writing
Cursive writing is introduced in 5K at Denbigh Christian Academy. Students will learn to write their name, letters, blends, simple words, and numbers. Students are graded on accuracy and effort.

RESOURCES:

Language Development/Enrichment
A number of enrichment activities are provided through poems and stories. Students learn to recognize sentences by capital letters and periods. Science topics include plants, animals, health, earth and space. Social Studies topics include community helpers, children of the world, and an introduction to America. 5K students enjoy weekly visits to the library for story time and introductory library skills.

Art
Students in the 5K classes have many opportunities to continue development of motor skills and to experience art mediums in the creation of various projects throughout the school year.

Music
Students in 5K classes at Denbigh Christian Academy sing everyday! In addition to musical activities in the classroom, students experience weekly instruction with the music teacher. This class is designed according to a prescribed, age appropriate curriculum.

Physical Education
Daily recess is apart of the schedule for all elementary classes at Denbigh Christian Academy. The 5K students also have a weekly class with the Physical Education teacher to focus on specific age appropriate skills.

Special Activities
Classes at Denbigh Christian Academy have various opportunities throughout the school year to experience educational field trips. Classroom parties are held for celebrations such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day, student birthdays, or other occasions the teacher may select. Special guests may also be invited to present programs to enhance the spiritual and educational content of our program.
